The guides

Two guides, one long table

Bakari and Emani are with every student, every day the school is open.

  • Bakari Gipson, founding guide, standing in a doorway in the school hallway

    Bakari Gipson

    Founding guide

Started Seminar after teaching middle school. Leads the seminar mornings, the writing workshop and the Friday showings, and is at the door when the first student arrives. Brings a ukulele to lunch most days.

  • Emani Gilchrist, guide, standing beside a raised bed in the school's courtyard garden

    Emani Gilchrist

    Guide

Leads math, the science bench and the garden beds in the yard. Keeps every student's project folder and writes the note that goes home each Friday.

How the guides work with families

Each family has a first conversation at the visit, a short meeting after the first month, and one more each term. A student's project folder is open to parents at any of them.

On Friday afternoon the guides write a note home about what each student worked on that week. Questions go to the office or straight to a guide by text.

Meet them at a visit

A visit day is a morning with both guides and the students.
